I rosens namn
In Rosens Namn – A Rose-Inspired Exhibition at Trädgårdsföreningen, Gothenburg
On June 18, an expressive and beautiful exhibition opened at Växthuset in Trädgårdsföreningen, Gothenburg. Inspired by the deep and sensual passion for roses shared by renowned actors Ghita Nørby and Tomas von Brömssen, this show is a celebration of "the queen of flowers" in all her forms. Through artistry, personal reflection and sensory experiences, the exhibition invites all visitors to discover the rose’s timeless charm.
A Magical Opening
The short, yet poignant, inauguration featured warm welcomes from the head of Trädgårdsföreningen, scenographer Yvonne Ericsson, and Tomas von Brömssen himself. After a few heartfelt words, Tomas led the audience in a communal singalong of “Den blomstertid nu kommer,” filling the space with summer. He followed up by playing a whimsical piece from "Rosenkavaljeren" on his small willow pipe, rhythmically tapping his foot – a moment captured here. The ceremony ended with the ceremonial cutting of the rose ribbon, officially opening the exhibition to the invited guests.
Sensory Journey Through Four Rooms
As you step into the first of four exhibition rooms, you are immediately greeted by the star of the show: the rose. At first, there is only one—but soon its rich fragrance envelops you, setting a mood of anticipation. Next, visitors encounter a cracked vase brimming with roses, accompanied by Gustav Fröding’s evocative poetry.
The exhibition is a captivating potpourri of environments—furniture, porcelain, textiles, everyday objects, and art—where the rose acts as a unifying motif. Sprinkled throughout are personal messages from Ghita and Tomas, sharing their unique perspectives on the beloved flower. One playful anecdote reveals that Ghita is not a fan of yellow roses, yet a yellow rose variety was named in her honor—something that made her, perhaps, a bit “rosenrasande.” See Ghita in a famous role with the infamous yellow rose here!
Also on display are images and memorabilia from both actors’ illustrious careers, alongside select props and stage sets which offer a window into their creative lives. Tomas spexar in one memorable photo, blending humor with artistry.
Artistic Vision and History
Originally shown at Fredriksdal Gardens in 2004, the exhibition again benefits from the expertise of producer Ulf Dahlström. Yvonne Ericsson’s scenography has beautifully shaped the rooms, perfectly echoing Ghita’s and Tomas’s thoughts on roses and life.
